10 March 2007
RECEPTION - 7:00 - 9:00 p.m., Modern Fuel Gallery.
ARTIST TALK - 8:00 p.m.
“... in Anderson’s renderings, we are
several removes away from reality itself: there is
the war; behind it are the government officials;
behind them, the lobbyists and think tanks; in front
are the TV cameras, the digital cameras, and even
the unauthorized emailed telephone/camera photos
belonging to the soldiers themselves, then the contexts
of newspaper and television editorials; in the foreground
is the American audience, the Canadian audience,
the world audience—and finally the artist himself
making sense out of this many-layered public domain.”
From “Tobey C. Anderson’s ‘New
American Century’”
by R. D. MacDonald
The title for this body of work comes from the Project
for the New American Century (PNAC), a Washington,
D.C. think tank made up of key figures in the Bush
Administration who authored a blueprint for U.S.
pre-eminence in the world in 2000. Painted using
appropriated Internet and Media images, the four
parts of “Portraits of the New American Century” depict “K_IA” -
American soldiers killed in action from the State
of Iowa, “Foreign Terrorists” from an
anonymous website, “Collateral Damage” - Iraq
citizens, and “KIA_CA_Afghanistan” - an
open series of Canadian soldiers killed in that war
zone. Arranged in chessboard-like groupings, with
over 100 portraits, the work incorporates florescent
RGB colours that mimic TV and computer screens when
exposed to black light.
Tobey C. Anderson lives in the Niagara Region of
Ontario, Canada. Born in 1946 in Washington, D.C.,
he grew up in the U.S. Midwest, was drafted for combat
duty in Vietnam, and deserted the U.S. Army after
Advanced Infantry Training (AIT). In 1969 he immigrated
to Kingston, Ontario and in 1975 became a Canadian
citizen. Anderson is represented by cramart.ca and
is in numerous public and private collections internationally.
