Upcoming Exhibition: Preston Schiedel @ Agnes Etherington Art Centre

NEW EXHIBITION

Documents in Time:

The Landscape Photography of Preston Schiedel

17 April to 4 July 2010

Documents in Time is the Art Centre’s first presentation of recently acquired works by one of Kingston’s most highly regarded photographers: Preston Schiedel. The show features landscape images documenting trajectories of human use and neglect within the city and the surrounding region. Taken between 2000 and 2006, these black and white photographs from Schiedel’s Where the Waters Meet series draw attention to the intersection of the long history of each site and the singular moment encapsulated in the photograph. The images depict change, such as the migration of gas stations from the city centre or shifting patterns of recreation, through the particular and the familiar. Schiedel’s use of a large format Banquet camera lends these prints a signature velvety visual texture. His canny deployment of subdued atmospheric light and precise composition evokes a sense of abandonment, drawing the viewer into contemplation of the ways in which time impacts the built landscape.

Join the artist at the celebratory reception for this exhibition and Don Maynard: Franken Forest at the Art Centre on Saturday 8 May, 7 pm. Both artists will offer introductory remarks on their projects.

This exhibition was developed by Cultural Studies Program graduate student Jessica Parker as part of a practicum course under the supervision of Jan Allen, Chief Curator/Curator of Contemporary Art.

This exhibition is presented with the support of the Ontario Arts Council (an agency of the Government of Ontario), the Canada Council for the Arts and the City of Kingston and the Kingston Arts Council through the City of Kingston Arts Fund.
